Safety when traveling:  Check out this
safety commercial for teens by Suburu.
  • Why should you wear a seatbelt?  In Missouri, wearing a seat belt is the law.  Injuries and death
happen often for people who don't wear their seat belts and we see the results firsthand as paramedics
at PTFD.  Teenagers are at the greatest risk, so, as a parent, you need to make sure your teens are
using their seatbelt.   "Compared with other age groups, teens have the lowest rate of seat belt use. In
2005, 10% of high school students reported they rarely or never wear seat belts when riding with
someone else."  Set an example as an adult and wear your seatbelt; teach your children to do the same.

  • Every 12 minutes somebody in the United States dies in a traffic collision.  Adults who don’t buckle up
aresending children the message that it is OK not to wear seat belts.  Children model adult behavior.  Research
shows that when a driver is unbuckled, 70 percent of the time children riding in that car will not be buckled either.
Unrestrained children are at great risk of harm. A child unrestrained in a 30 mile-per-hour crash is like a child
dropped from a third story window. (Source:  Seat Belts and Injury Prevention)

  • Is your child or infant using the right safety seat?  Missouri has required the use of child safety
seats since August 28, 2006.  Your child must be in a booster seat if they are ages 4 through 7 who
weigh at least 40 pounds, unless they are 80 pounds or 4’9” tall. The ticket fee is $50.00 plus court
    costs.

  • What about cell phone and texting on the road?  Set a good example as parents and make sure
your teenager isn't talking on the phone or texting while driving either.  Have a serious talk with your teen
about this.  Want to find out if they're texting while driving?  Go to your phone account and if their texting
coincides with times they are driving, you need to be proactive and help prevent a serious accident.  Be
sure you know what the laws are nationwide regarding texting or talking while driving.
