$6,527.60 and items collected for Joplin
Prairie Township Firefighters collected more than $6,000 over the
Memorial Day weekend by manning a boot block at the intersection of
Milton Thompson Road and Langsford Road, the site of Prairie
Township Fire. Money was also collected from donation sites at four
local businesses-Tom's Meat Market, Lakehouse Restaurant, Temp
Stop, and Gibson's General Store-brought the total to $6,527.60. The
money was turned over to United Way to directly aid victims of the
deadly Joplin tornado.
The Prairie Township Fire Station also served as a place for citizens to
drop off donations of various hard goods for the tornado victims. Those
donated items were loaded onto a truck by Prairie Town Fire Protection
District firefighters May 31st to be delivered to Joplin.
Prairie Township was among the many agencies that responded directly
to Joplin to aid in search and rescue efforts. A task force of ambulances
from Prairie Township, Lake Lotawana Fire District, Pleasant Hill Fire
District, and Johnson County Ambulance District left for Joplin Sunday
night, a few hours after the tornado devastated the city. The task force,
led by PTFD chief, Larry Robinson, remained on duty at Joplin until
Monday evening, when they were relieved by units in the St. Louis area.
The ambulances transported patients from Freeman Hospital in Joplin
to other hospitals in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
Later in the week, additional PTFD personnel traveled to Joplin at their
own expense to assist in search and rescue efforts.
